Focus on Others and You'll be Helping Yourself

I’ve interacted with you amazing alumni at events, meetings and service projects. I’ve noticed your passion for living sober increases as you experience life from a ‘giving mindset.’ You’ve all heard the saying, “It’s better to give than to receive.” When you put this into practice, it truly changes who you are. Thank you for making others the focus. As you meet with the current patient group, your very lives become a beacon of hope guiding them through their current rough waters. Each day you can thoughtfully pick a person and make their day. Whether it’s your spouse, your child, the Walmart cashier or a current patient…when you practice giving to others, you’ll find your joy in sobriety increasing. So, go out and make it happen!

"It is possible to have an amazing life not driven by drugs and alcohol" -Kari (Alum)

I spent the month of August 2017 at Atchison Valley Hope. What began as the scariest time of my life ended up being what I consider to be one of the best months of my life. I have built such strong connections with so many people who share my deep and abiding gratitude for Valley Hope. It’s why I make every effort to participate in the alumni Renewal Day. It gives me that same sense of belonging and feeling of “coming home.” I also go to Renewal Day to give back. For any patient who isn’t sure if a clean and sober life is even possible, I hope that my words make a difference. I hope that my presence, even in a small way, will give them a glimpse of what sobriety can be for them. It is possible to have an amazing life that isn’t driven by drugs and alcohol. -Kari

Planting a seed into the ground

1. Pray/meditate – Try putting your shoes, phone, or keys under your bed at night so in the morning you must get on your knees to retrieve them and will already be on your knees for prayer.

2. Attend a meeting – Usually when you don’t want to go to a meeting is when you should. Try implementing 90 meetings in 90 days to obtain a regular routine. Attending the same meeting within that 90 days will help start building your support system/community.

3. Read recovery literature – There’s copious amounts of options for literature to choose from. It’s never a bad idea to read something inspirational to start or end your day.

2019 Recovery Rally

The month of September was National Recovery Month. Among numerous events, Valley Hope teamed up with Advocates for Recovery in Denver, CO for the annual Recovery Rally on September 21st. Alumni, faculty, friends and family joined countless others unified in the fight against addiction. Those who unfortunately lost their lives to this devastating disease were honored with a leaf placed on a beautiful painted tree. Fellowship, music, food, and laughter were all paramount on this beautiful day.
